Le Figaro ran an article about The Darkness, writing: "The elegant camera work of Swedish filmmaker Lasse Hallström (What's Eating Gilbert Grape, Chocolat) plays with transparencies and magnificently captures the landscapes of Iceland and the darkness of the Arctic night, creating a silent, almost oppressive atmosphere."
